Camilo R. Gomez, M.D. - Dr. Gomez is widely recognized as one of the world's leading Neurologists and has significantly impacted the fields of Interventional Neurology and Vascular/Critical Care Neurology. In the clinical arena, he brings to bear his vast experience culled over many years of working with patients with Neurological injury. His primary focus now is furthering the development of the field of Interventional Neurology, which involves the application of endovascular surgical techniques to restore blood flow through to the cerebral vasculature (brain blood vessels). His advocacy for victims of stroke is evidenced in his involvement in many organizations, including the Alabama Governor's Stroke Task Force, the Delta States Stroke Consortium, the American Academy of Neurology, the American Society of Neuroimaging, the Neurocritical Care Society, the Society for Critical Care Medicine and many others. Actively involved in patient care, he continues to work closely with the legal community through Case Review and Expert Testimony.

 

Sean C. Orr, M.D - Dr. Orr is a young, ambitious Neurologist who is rapidly ascending the ranks of Neurological experts. He completed fellowship training under Dr. Gomez in 2001, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. As such, he practices Interventional Neurology and Vascular/Critical Care Neurology. He has special interests in the application of emerging technologies to Neurologically injured patients, particularly nanotechnology, stem cell implantation, artificial intelligence, and quantum teletransportation. He is involved currently in developing new modes of neuroimaging as well as novel mechanisms for transporting and storing neuroimages for use by clinicians. His particular area of expertise has made him a useful expert witness for medical legal purposes, and he works closely with the legal community in a variety of capacities. He is dedicated to the welfare of the population of Alabama, as evidenced by his active involvement in a variety of societies and organizations.

 

Susana M. Bowling, M.D. - Dr. Bowling completed her fellowship training under Dr. Gomez in 2002. She, too, is an ambitious young clinician who is rapidly gaining recognition for her work as an Interventional Neurologist. She is noted for establishing the first Women’s Center for Stroke Care, which is devoted to the improvement of health in women who are stroke victims or who are at risk. Her involvement in public health initiatives ultimately will benefit women and Hispanics, both of whom are at disparately higher risk of stroke. This advocacy is extended through her involvement in multiple national Neurological associations. In addition, her clinical work involved Endovascular Therapy and Vascular/Critical Care Neurology. She has an active outpatient clinic and sees patients with a variety of Neurological complaints, particularly those which are related to stroke.



Morgan S. Campbell, M.D. - Dr. Campbell is a Board certified neurologist that graduated with highest honors at the University of Texas at Austin. He continued his education at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics and completed fellowship training under Dr. Gomez in 1999, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He specializes in the evaluation and treatment of neurovascular disorders, cerebral angiography, neurovascular angioplasty and stenting, and neurovascular ultrasound.  He has been very involved in the research of new procedures and drugs, as well as their impact in the treatment of neurovascular disorders.  He has published extensively and is well known among members of the neurological community. Following completion of his fellowship, Dr. Campbell spent three years as Assistant Professor of Neurology at the University of Texas-Houston.  He was happy to join the ANI team, enhancing the accomplishments of the organization in our community.

 

Elizabeth A. Noser, M.D. - Dr. Noser completed her medical training at the University of Texas-Houston Medical School, all the way from undergraduate to post-graduate training in Neurology and Neurorecovery.  Her special interest in neurologic recovery has been the perfect complement for the ANI Acute Care Team.  Her expertise derives from her background in both Neurology and Rehabilitation. In addition, Dr. Noser is also very involved in the implementation of educational and community outreach programs that target minority groups, particularly africam-american and Hispanics.  Her extensive experience in Houston is likely to lead to implementation of highly successful programs in the Birmingham area.  Finally, a committed researcher, Dr. Noser dedicates a large proportion of her time to epidemiologic and clinical research projects.

 

James Daniel Geyer, M.D. -Dr. Geyer is a well known neurologist that specializes in sleep disorders. He completed his undergraduate work at Duke University and his medical school and internship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Then, Dr. Geyer completed a fellowship on Epilepsy, Sleep Medicine and EEG at the University of Michigan. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (with added qualifications in Clinical Neurophysiology), the American Board of Sleep Medicine, and the American Society of Neuroimaging. His experience and specialized training bring an additional dimension to the ANI commitment to meeting patients’ needs.

 

Gordon J. Kirschberg, M.D. - Dr. Kirschberg is a seasoned neurologist, trained at the famous New York Neurological Institute.  His vast experience, and expertise in movement disorders are only matched by his skills in clinical electrophysiology.  Dr. Kirshberg’s area of interested is the treatment of patients with Parkinson’s disease, tremor, dystonia and other movement abnormalities.  His career spans several decades, and his interest in movement disorders research highlights his continued involvement in the investigation of new methods for treatment of these conditions.


 

Daniel Christian Potts , M.D. -Dr. Potts graduated cum laude from Birmingham Southern College. He then completed his medical training at the University of South Alabama and his specialty training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.  He has completed multiple research projects in the anti-viral and pharmacology of neurologic disorders. He is committed to providing excellent care for his patients and in doing so, he continues to research new treatment options that will benefit them.  He is certified by the American Society of Neuroimaging in computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and neurosonology.

 

Nursing Faculty

Nancy V. Lemons, R.N. - Mrs. Lemons obtained her practical nursing degree in Marietta, Georgia, later completing her associate nursing degree from the Jefferson State Community College.   She became a Registered Nurse in 1987, and has been utilizing and expanding her expertise which now span almost two decades.   After s pending six years as Senior Clinical Nurse Coordinator of the UAB Comprehensive Stroke Center, she embarked in developing and organizing the nursing services of the ANI, fulfilling the mission of the position she currently holds.   A native of Birmingham, Mrs. Lemons has a great commitment and dedication to our community.   She has not only been heavily involved in specialized neurologic care (particularly stroke and neurocritical care) but has also participated in numerous research and educational programs.   She is an active member of multiple well known professional organizations related to neurologic diseases, and participates in regional and national advocacy groups. In the past, she has been recognized for going the "extra mile", a characteristic that assures that our patients will received the best possible nursing care available in the area.

 

J. David Rhodes, R.N, B.S.N. - Mr. Rhodes completed his nursing education at the University of Alabama School of Nursing In 1996.   He then worked full-time in the Neuro-Intensive Care Unit at UAB Hospital, from where he was recruited to join the team of the UAB Comprehensive Stroke Center.   In 2003, he became part of the team that organized and founded the ANI, remaining an integral part of the operations.   In addition to holding the title of Assistant Director of Nursing, Mr. Rhodes is the Director of Nursing Research and generally coordinates all research efforts at the ANI.   Also a native of Birmingham, Mr. Rhodes has strong ties to our community and is committed to provide the best possible neurologic care to the patients we serve.
